Description
He does not officially begin as their Music Director until the 25-26 season and has many other plans with them; but Parisian Fabien Gabel is already steeping the Tonkunstler in the special stylistic features of French music. Paul Dukas's symphonic poem «L'apprenti sorcier», based on Goethe's famous ballad «The Sorcerer's Apprentice», shows that this also means exploiting international artistic cross-connections. Maurice Ravel's «Tzigane», here with soloist Renaud Capuçon, would be unthinkable without the fiery violin virtuosity of the Puszta; and Modest Mussorgky's «Pictures at an Exhibition» only captured the world through Ravel's sensitive orchestral version, itself almost a treatise on the art of orchestration.
