Our ancestors invented myths to understand the world - a world that was liveable and loveable, but sometimes also mysterious and hostile. Against the will of Zeus, Prometheus created humans and gave them fire. A terrible punishment was the consequence. Ludwig van Beethoven celebrated the Titan and his heroic deed in a ballet. And his Fourth Piano Concerto is probably based on the legend of Orpheus: in the middle movement the piano pleads in the underworld for the release of his beloved Eurydice. Robert Schumann's Symphony in D minor also sounds like a myth that peels out of misty veils before the sun bursts through in the finale.
