Schoenberg Day

The start of Schönberg Day in Vienna to mark the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth. Starting at the Arnold Schönberg Centre Vienna, the 19th century is explored.

The second of our five concerts dedicated to Schoenberg: The Composer with a Foot in Four Centuries, as part of the Arnold Schoenberg Center's Schoenberg 150 celebrations. This programme considers Schoenberg's relationship with the 18th century, placing excerpts from Bach's The Art of Fugue alongside Schoenberg's Six Little Piano Pieces.

6 Little Piano Pieces, Op. 19

Hear us present Schoenberg as a harbinger of the 21st century, in Vienna's iconic Secession building. Designed by an at the time very young Joseph Maria Olbrich, the Secession was not an unmitigated success in 1900 - one critic likened it to a "temple for bullfrogs". Today, it is iconic, containing Klimt's famous Beethoven Frieze and recognised as exuding the innovation and optimism that also characterised modernism at this time.

On our programme: a string quartet (2009) by the the Viennese composer Olga Neuwirth (*1968), followed by Schoenberg's serialist String Quartet No. 4.

Kultursommer Wien joins our partners Grafenegg and the Arnold Schoenberg Center Vienna as we perform in the Hyblerpark, and conclude our 150th anniversary tribute to Arnold Schoenberg. Music by Bernstein, Skalkottas, Andresen, and Berlin joins a movement of Schoenberg's Wind Quintet op. 26 in the last of five presentations of Schoenberg's connections to four different centuries.
